This Week on The Hope Strategy Podcast we team up with the Orphan Myth Project to bring a special mini-series talking to some of the people involved in the project. In this episode we talk with Brian Mavis – Brian shares his vision for a better foster care system and hopes for increased care and support of children of all ages. Brian talks about the problems facing the system and what solutions exist currently. This episode is part 1 of our orphan myth mini series.
I was at a Mexican orphanage, and after being there for some time, I finally asked the executive director “how did all these kids’ parents die?” and he said, “They’re not dead.”
He said, “They are kids who’ve been abused, neglected and abandoned… some of the parents are in prison or in prostitution and in almost every case bad addiction is involved. And my wife said, “Oh my gosh, these are the same kids here in the States, but we just call them something different.” And that was a real lightbulb moment and she realized “I can fulfill God’s purpose in my life where I live in every county in the United States are kids who need that help.”
