Audrey Gruss talks about her parents escape from communism in Lithuania following World War 2, her upbringing and the lessons learned from her immigrant parents, and the work she has done in the beauty industry. Audrey also talks about how her mothers struggle with depression inspired the founding of the Hope For Depression Research Foundation. Audrey shares how treatment for depression has stayed the same for the last 35 years – something that urgently needs to change – and shares her hope for the future of treatments and social acceptance of individuals with mental health challenges.
It is shocking that we have a new cell phone every few months and that we have been to the moon. Yet 35% of people do not respond to the existing medications for depression, and the SSRI / Prozac type of medications we currently have are over 35 years old.
One third of Americans are struggling with depression and anxiety. It is amazing that people do not know this fact. Depression is the number one cause of disability in the world. It’s not infections or anything else…It’s depression.
